Assignment 2 Comments

Ailing Kwon

Key strength of the scheme:

Lovely approach and well consideration to the placement of the studios.

Nice black background to the axonometrics.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

You have extensively exceeded the 9 prism restriction. You need to add more quality to your drawings, as they are not well crafted. The design in sitting on a flat base and could have been further developed with improved sculptural qualities.

Seems to lack consideration of scale.

Ankit Grover

Lovely consideration of the clients. Good appreciation of the building being used by ‘humans’ and well considered locations for the images to be taken.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

The axonometrics need to be ‘cleaned’ and better crafted. The scale and massing of your prisms could have been more articulated and this would have occurred if we had another week.

Chevy Ho

Key strength of the scheme:

Nice combination of the 9 prisms. Good landform manipulation.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

The textures are of very poor quality and do not achieve the brief requirements. The building seems to not be well seated to the ground and hangs precariously. Additional colours, textures and lighting would have helped accentuate the scheme.

Ignat Labazine

Key strength of the scheme:

Fantastic and beautiful response to the design. Lovely setting and good use of lighting and textures. Very iconic building location and landform.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Textures are improving but need still need refinement.

Jeremiasz Sieczko

Key strength of the scheme:

Good approach to the design with mature theoretical approach to the task. Lovely consideration of the two studios and the way in which the two take on different locations (introverted and extroverted).

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

The manipulation of the prisms could have been further considered and located in a more interesting architectural form. Use of colour and texture would have helped add value to the scheme.

Matthew Prumm

Key strength of the scheme:

Interesting location that is starting to gain credibility to its location.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Lack of colour and lighting to enhance the scheme. Bulky sculpture with little appreciation of the clients and their character, personalities and needs.

Poorly crafted axonometrics and textures.

MIngzhe Cao

Key strength of the scheme:

Could have been a very beautiful design as picks up some interesting ideas and good consideration of the landform typology.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Your have far exceeded the number of permissible prisms and have been penalised for this.

Your axonometric needs improvement through practice.

Murtada Madhi

Key strength of the scheme:

Good consideration of the use of the studios and the clients. Lovely sketch axonometrics and textures.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Although the building are founded in the landscape they still seem partially arbitrary places and additional elements to the landform could have helped bond the dwellings to the landscape. Additional colours would have helped highlight and accentuate the design. Overall an improved effort from Experiment 1.

Olivia Green

Key strength of the scheme:

Lovely scheme with such a good appreciation of the human scale and the way in which it is used. Good internal external intersection and use of colours and textures, although some are a bit too bright and ‘childish’.

Magnificent textures, although the axonometrics could be improved. Keep up the good work.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Colours as discussed above

Peter Olive

Key strength of the scheme:

Beautiful form and well crafted way in which the building reciprocates and works with the landscape. The ending and articulation to the slope of the land is working well. Beautiful textures and axonometrics.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

No colours and textures on the final model. Lighting also could have improved the presentation. Although not fully achieved for the brief the improvement from the first is admirable. If achieved then assignment would have received a DN easily.

Plini Roessler- Holgate

Key strength of the scheme:

Beautiful clean lines and clever design approach that sits lovely in its context. Lovely textures and some of the images are very beautiful and well considered. Lighting enhances some of the building so beautifully.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Design seems squashed and needs to flow or breath more.

Rhys Symington

Key strength of the scheme:

Lovely use of colours and textures to the design. Good theoretical base behind the design which gives validity to your scheme and which has pulled through nicely.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Some of the images taken were not the best locations to show off the building.

Ricky Fan

Key strength of the scheme:

Beautifully presented drawings and the textures are magnificent.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

The studios could be further refined, especially the base which sits a little awkward on in the landscape. Very little consideration of your landform seen in the images.

Rouhieh Nazari

Key strength of the scheme:

Colourful and interesting manipulation of the prisms. The combination of the prisms to Darwin’s lab is nicely considered.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

You haven’t fully understood the brief of keeping the studios only to 9 rectangular prisms. Additional colour and textures would add to the scheme. The craftsmanship of your drawings and textures are very poor and need a lot of improvement through practice.

Tal Barhom

Key strength of the scheme:

Nice quotes

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Some components missing, while others were of very poor quality. Clear evidence of lack of work undertaken. Completion of axonometric is required prior to completion of the course.

Warren Zhang

Key strength of the scheme:

Beautifully crafted axonometric drawings and textures. Nice landform manipulation and setting.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Your design lacks a cohesive connection of the landscape and is not well bodied. Additional colours could have added interest to the scheme. The massing seems too tight and could have flowed and expressed itself more in the landscape.

Willam Wei

Key strength of the scheme:

Nice textures with lovely gradient from light to dark.

Beautiful individual approach to the assignment with architecture that is well manipulated and sited into the landscape. Beautiful landscape creation and well considered image locations and use of lighting.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Late submission with penalty. Axonometric not finished.

Xinyi Ling

Key strength of the scheme:

Some lovely landform manipulation. Good understanding and theoretical appreciation to your design, which is admirable.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Again you have not presented your studios and also the axonometrics and textures with any care or consideration. This will not be acceptable for Experiment 3. The images of your studios don’t give a good appreciation of what the design in like. Make sure you select the best angle for the images so that the viewer sees your building in the best light.

Phoenix Xu

Key strength of the scheme:

Some elements of your design are nicely embodied into the landscape, although they could have been taken further. Some of your images are beautifully positioned and highlight the building in its context.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Your design is too loose and needs refinement in terms of scale, height, bulk etc. There is a lack of colour and texture in your design and an opportunity is lost there.

ASSIGNMENT ONE COMMENTS

Kwon Ai Ling

Key strength of the scheme:

Some interesting elements used in the above ground studio and how they articulate together.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Lack of articulation of the below ground space and what it means to be building there. Your animations do not assist in the presentation of your building. Stairs could have been developed further.

Ankit Grover

Key strength of the scheme:

Interesting scheme with some expressive elements that are utilising both form and spatial expression in an emotive and meaningful way.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Disappointing to see the furniture in the design when I said not to put it in. Animations and images do not show the building in a human angle or scale. Stairs do not show significant design in respect to the artist.

Chevy Ho

Key strength of the scheme:

Nice spatial qualities generated from your form. Good to see the form of the design is an integral part of the formulation of the space.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Design convoluted in parts and difficult to interpret. Stairs could be further developed.

Darren Chen

Key strength of the scheme:

Stairs taking interesting form and could develop up into an integral part of the scheme.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

You did not submit the requirements of the assignment. You also have not selected the correct artists for the assignment. Expect more effort to the next assignment.

Ignat Labazine

Key strength of the scheme:

Beautifully generated model really well thought-out scheme that is both lovely to look at and be within.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Sketches and hatching craftsmanship could be improved.

Jennifer Yuwono

No submit

Jeremiasz Sieczko

Key strength of the scheme:

Your have nicely considered the building as a 3D form and it being used on a human scale. Your appreciation of the internal spaces of the building are well considered and articulated.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Stairs need further development although they are picking up some interesting conceptualisation. The studio could have developed it further with colour or more articulation of its sculptural form

Matthew Prumm

Key strength of the scheme:

Interesting conceptual approach to the design, although further development is need to improve the design.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Not articulation to the below ground space. I don’t see any materiality, colour and textures used in the design of the space.

Your drawings are not well crafted.

The stairs don't really achieve the objectives of the brief. Your animations seem unfinished and do not present your building in any significant manner.

Mingzhe Cao

Key strength of the scheme:

Have some interesting sculptural qualities, although rather haphazard and with little theoretical analysis.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Animations lacking any value.

You have not considered the full experience of the underground space and what that means to your architecture.

Murtada Madhi

Key strength of the scheme:

Interesting architectural form that encapsulates your theoretical ideologies to the architecture. This is a good and mature approach and highly recommended.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Viewer is unable to appreciate the design effectively. Trees reduce the effectiveness of the design. Your animations are too quick and not relevant to showing off the design.

OIivia Green

Key strength of the scheme:

Starting to develop an architectural quality. Good appreciation of human scale. The drawings and sketches are well crafted and throughout out.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Interesting form but lacks any significant architectural response at the moment. Needs to encapsulate more aesthetic qualities when viewed from the inside and outside.

Peter Olive

Key strength of the scheme:

Interesting form. Although the design seems not to progress much in the latter weeks of the assignment. The stairs are not significant or added as an integral part of the scheme.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Good utilisation of the textures.

Plini Roessler-Holgate

Key strength of the scheme:

Lovely utilisation of light and solar access in the below ground studio and your animations are well done in being able to convey this to the viewer.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Internal spaces of the studios need further resolution in that they are empty and none are expressive of the artists or their works.

Rhys Symington

Key strength of the scheme:

Can start to see some interesting architectural qualities coming through in the design with well thought-out emotions, responses and expressions.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Stairs could have been further developed to work more expressively with the design. Overall good effort and the final design came through better than I expected. The below ground space does not have the interests that the above ground space has and lacks significant architectural merit.

Ricky Fan

Key strength of the scheme:

Good design that comes together as one architectural element. Fantastic presentation and design resolution.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Some of your early design sketches were of a lower quality. Although you seem to have improved in the later drawings, which is very good to see you progressing well.

Rouhieh Nazari

Key strength of the scheme:

Interesting architectural response, although still has a 3D form from the 2D extraction, which we discussed and should be reconsidered. Architecture is a 3D item that can be viewed on all sides.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Your animations do not assist in the presentation of your dwelling. It would be good to have a walk through next time as to what a user would see.

Poor final resolution of the stairs.

Many items in the design seem arbitrary and without any reason. Don't add things for no reason but utilise them to form part of your architectural expression.

Tal Barhom

Key strength of the scheme:

Your are generating your architectural expression out of your ideas and theoretical approach which is admirable.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Your presentation of your hatching, which was very poor (use a scanner).

Your animations are very jumpy and not relate to the dwelling.

Unable to appreciate your design in your presentation, especially on a human scale

Warren Zhang

Key strength of the scheme:

Starting to pick up some nice architectural form and expression. Beautiful 3D qualities to the space.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Some elements seem arbitrarily added with no purpose to the scheme. Try to generate architectural form about the need and necessity of its requirements and not just add things for the sake of it. Making the items blend or act cohesively together also could help in the design process.

Stairs could have been developed much further.

William Wei

Key strength of the scheme:

Beautiful roof form with fantastic sculptural and 3D qualities.

Nice craftsmanship to your drawings.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

No appreciation of the below ground space from your presentation.

Phoenix Xu

Key strength of the scheme:

Some interesting elements to the scheme that add to the architectural interest, although some seem arbitrary and not an integral part of the scheme.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Stairs are extremely weak and have no design theoretical approach to them at all.

Well we are now on Experiment 2.

Things that I really want you to think about as discussed in class.

1. Look at the sculptural quality’s of the objects you are creating as well as look and the internal spatial configuration of the studios for the clients.

2. Look at examples of other works and how they analysis and represent their ideas in their architectural forms.

3. Consider with more care the locations from where you take your images from. I good image can even make a poor building shine. Some of you in the past did not utilise this to your advantage. Human eye height shots generally give a good visual connection of the viewer and the object.

4. Objects. Think about what you add to your designs and what it means to be there. Don’t just add pot plants and picture frames because they are in the library. Think about what the object does to the design and how does it help your architectural expression.

5. Now we are using a program that is quite well developed I would like to see some more expressive and ‘involvement’ in your architecture. Let it try to talk to us in a feeling or let it give us its presence. Make the design work to your idea and make the building also talk to us through your forms, colour, texture, gravity, light, etc.

6. Take more time in the crafting of the axos and drawings. I do not want to see rushed drawings. I would prefer to see less number of well made drawings than looks at scrappy and poorly drawn sketches.

The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization. Frank Lloyd Wright

Assignment 1. Overall a mixed variety of schemes, some have some good architectural merits, although others seemed to have not developed much from the first weeks.

Key here that for the next assignments is that I would like some more exploration and looking at different ideas that make take the design into a different direction. Don’t get fixated on particular idea that you feel you have to keep. I have included comments to you all below - both good and bad.

Thanks Brad
